News: New Nexus 6 Update Downgrades Your Android Version Back to 7.0
Google has done it again—they've pushed another broken OTA update for the Nexus 6. Except this time, it almost completely softbricks your Nexus 6 instead of just screwing up Android Pay and SafetyNet. Apps are force-stopping left and right, making the phone practically unusable.You might be wondering how a giant company like Google could do this to a phone that's barely over two years old. The reason why the Nexus 6, a decent phone in all aspects, is now causing headaches and migraines, is apparently because Google's trying to fix what they broke with the previous OTA.UPDATE: A Google community manager replied to the Reddit thread stating that the 7.0 OTA was not a mistake, and that the Nexus 6 had intentionally been downgraded. The CM went on to say that if users wanted to guarantee future OTA support, they should take the 7.0 OTA. A final tidbit of advice from the CM was to wipe your Nexus 6 if you faced any issues with your device after taking the 7.0 OTA.

What Went Wrong?Just a brief backstory, Google pushed out an Android 7.1.1 update to the Nexus 6 last week, but SafetyNet was failing, which caused Android Pay to break. So Google took down the bad OTA and pushed out a new one as of last night. This OTA, believe it or not, is an Android 7.0 "update."Don't Miss: Google's March Security Update Breaks Android Pay on Some Pixel & Nexus DevicesYes, you read that correctly. Google somehow managed to downgrade the Nexus 6 with the newest OTA. In theory, this shouldn't even be possible, as Android's built-in recovery is supposed to check each update to ensure that it's a newer Android version than the one currently running on your phone. But it's apparently possible after all, as Redditor Time_Lord_John has shared a screenshot of his device receiving the broken OTA. The Android 7.0 update appearing on a phone running Android 7.1.1. The reason why this is such a massive blunder is because Android should never be downgraded without wiping all of the data, since each update brings something new under the already-existing system applications that use the same package names. This isn't even mentioning the fact that the OTA downgrades your security patch level from January 2017 to August 2016, exposing the device to older security exploits again.
How Widespread Is the Problem?For starters, we know that all devices on US carriers are getting the bad update. There's only one way to avoid this horrible OTA, and that's by sideloading the previously-broken March 2017 update with Fastboot.Don't Miss: The Complete Guide to Flashing Factory Images on Android Using FastbootIf you did take the broken 7.0 OTA, the only way to regain use of your device is to wipe your data and sideload an entire system image. This isn't a viable fix for all users, since most of them will lose sensitive data by having to do so. SmartSilence: Silent Scheduler, a free Android app that will let you set weekly schedules for when your Note 2 should shut the f*** up. SmartSilence is a very simple, and easy-to-use app. It basically allows you to schedule when your Galaxy Note 2 will ring and not ring. Just like you would schedule a recurring alarm or reminder, you can use SmartSilence to set up times every week or day for when you wish your phone to be silent. Have class from 8 am to 2 pm? You can schedule your phone to be on silent every day for those hours so you never slip up. Have a weekly meeting at work? Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are available for pre-order right now, but the general public won't start to get their hands on these devices for another week or two. Tech reporters got some hands-on time at Google's launch event on October 4th, but camera testing wasn't allowed, and the Wi-Fi coverage at the event was too flooded for real-world performance reviews.Luckily, a Redditor, who we'll refer to as "Doe" for the sake of anonymity, managed to get a review unit from Google, then did an AMA to answer many questions users might have had about the new device. With a Nexus 6P on hand for comparison's sake, Doe has revealed lots of juicy Pixel details—including benchmark scores, camera quality, overall performance, and more.UPDATE: Doe's Reddit thread and all of the Pixel videos he uploaded to YouTube have been removed. We did our best to save as many of the original pictures and videos as possible, so you can still view the Pixel XL in action below, but some videos are missing. EIS Is the Real DealGoogle talked a big game when it came to the Pixel's improved camera, citing their DxOMark score of 89, the highest of any smartphone ever tested (though the iPhone 7 Plus's dual-lens camera hasn't been tested yet). But lost in the barrage of Pixel headlines was a much-improved Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) system briefly mentioned at the Pixel's unveiling.The Nexus 6P uses EIS as well, but a comparison documented by Doe, and subsequently removed from YouTube, showed how the Pixel is simply miles ahead of the Nexus 6P when it comes to video stabilization. We were able to grab the videos before they were taken down, so here's a side-by-side edit:
Considering that the Nexus 6P's EIS system beat out the Galaxy S7's Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in this test from months ago, I'm starting to think that the Pixel's lack of OIS is not going to be an issue at all.But hey, that's just a quick test in a dark hallway. How does the Pixel's EIS system fare in landscape mode with good lighting to show off any flaws? To answer that question, Doe (literally) went for a run while recording video with the Pixel XL, and the results in the video (also removed) were just as amazing, it looked like he was floating across the parking lot.UPDATE: Here's a mirror of the original daytime EIS test. Video quality is reduced from ripping the video, so don't judge the Pixel XL based purely on frame rate or resolution:

Camera Comparison (Still Photos)If the above videos are any indication, the Pixel's high DxOMark score is well-deserved—but how do the still photos look? Benchmarks & Battery PerformanceAlright, so it's time to address the big question: How's the Pixel's battery life? Doe charged up his Pixel XL to 100% this morning to do some real testing of its screen-on time (SoT), and the results so far are quite promising:At this exact minute SOT is 4:03, and my battery is 53%
— "Doe"Are you KIDDING me?! That projects out to a full eight or more hours of screen-on time, which would make the Pixel XL an instant contender for best smartphone battery life. SoT is one of the most useful real-world battery measurements, as it depicts exactly how long you'll be able to actively use your smartphone on a single charge.To put that 8-hour projection into perspective, I've always considered my Nexus 6P to have solid battery life, but it can only manage five hours of SoT on a good day—and that's without all of the benchmarks and camera tests that Doe had been running on the Pixel XL.Speaking of benchmarks, Doe ran an AnTuTu test on the Pixel XL with some impressive results. For comparison's sake, I ran the same test on my Nexus 6P, and the Pixel XL's score was nearly double my results in almost every category: (1) Nexus 6P AnTuTu benchmark scores. Last week marked the announcement of LG's new G3 smartphone, and with it came a ton of new features and improvements to their Optimus UI. While most manufacturers put little effort into their keyboards—probably due to the attraction of third-party alternatives—LG has made their latest iteration one of the best OEM keyboards I have ever used.In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to install the ported LG keyboard, and as a bonus, its new sounds and wallpapers, to your HTC One. The wallpapers and sounds are just regular files that can be copied over, but the keyboard does require you to have root permission to install properly. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Note that this is not limited to the HTC One, as every other rooted device I've tested this on installs and runs the keyboard just fine—everything from older devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3 to tablets like the Nexus 7.
Step 1: Download the LG G3 Keyboard APKThe original port was done by developer Cloudyfa, and it has since been packaged in a simple APK by bender_007. Because the app isn't available on Google Play, you'll have to download it from your One's browser, which means you'll need to have installation from "Unknown sources" checked.Click here to download the LG G3 Keyboard

Step 2: Install the KeyboardAfter the file has been downloaded, install it like you would any other app, then open the LG G3 Keyboard, grant Superuser permissions, and tap the Backup button. This will allow you to revert back to your stock keyboard settings if you decide to uninstall the G3 keyboard later. After it has backed up your previous keyboard, you'll be able to Install it. You will need to reboot your One after installing, and after that, you can enable it from Settings -> Language & keyboard -> LG Keyboard.

Step 3: Customize ItWhat sets this keyboard apart is its simple, yet useful customization options. When you tap the LG Keyboard option in your Language & Keyboard settings, you'll find all the tweaks that come with the G3 keyboard. Tapping Keyboard height and layout will allow you to change the keyboards height, switch up the bottom row layout, and switch between a white and black theme. To change the height, you would need to drag the bar above the keyboard either up or down. You also get all the features that have become standard to keyboards, including swiping input, Emoji support, suggestions, and auto-correct. There are also Additional settings that you can use to change the tapping effect as well as enable/disable auto-capitalization.

Handwriting SupportA somewhat hidden feature is the addition of handwriting support. Tap and hold the gear icon on the bottom left of your keyboard, then select the pen icon. The first time you use this feature, you will need to download the language file for your native tongue, then you're all set.

Wallpapers & SoundsIn the files linked below, you will find both the sounds and wallpapers that were pulled directly from the G3 ROM. After downloading them, either to your device or computer, unzip them and place them on your One's internal storage.The LG G3 Sounds The LG G3 Wallpapers The sounds are split between ringtones, alarms, and notifications, so you can place them in their appropriate folder in your storage, after which you can select them from the Sound section of your Settings app. As these are from the Korean version of the G3, the names of the sounds will be in Korean, but they work nonetheless. Now you have the new, high-resolution wallpapers and sounds from the G3, along with their kickass keyboard. There are plans in works to port more G3 exclusive apps, so be sure to stay tuned!

How To: Unlock the Bootloader & Root Your HTC One M8
As with most OEMs, HTC would like you to think that you can do virtually anything with your new HTC One M8, but as a softModder, you know that isn't true. To actually unleash the full potential of that device, you need access to the whole system, not just the parts that HTC deems okay for you to mess with.To truly reach your M8's full potential, you will first need to unlock your bootloader and root your device. By unlocking the bootloader, you grant your phone the ability to install custom recoveries, mods, and ROMs. With the custom recovery, you can root your device to gain administrator access, which allows you to modify the parts of the device's system that spell doom for some, but open doors for softModders. Now, I've already shown how to unlock and root the HTC One M7, but I'm gearing this one specifically for the new M8 with Android 4.4 KitKat, so there's no confusion. These instructions will also work for the M7, though.
The PrerequisitesBefore getting started, you need to get a few of the basic necessities out of the way first. Make sure you check off all of the following before moving on to the first step.Make sure your phone is at least 60% charged. Register for an account at HTCdev. Enable USB debugging in your phone's Developer options. Un-check "Fast boot" on your phone by going to Settings -> Battery Manager. Install ADB and Fastboot on your computer. Make sure to back up all of your app data using either ADB or HTC Sync, because you will be wiping your phone. Install the HTC One M8 drivers on your computer (if you have HTC Sync installed, then you already have them). Unfortunately, Verizon thought it best to keep you from unlocking your bootloader, so you'd have to use a different method to gain root access to your device.
How to Unlock Your BootloaderAfter you've met all of the prereqs above, it's time to unlock your bootloader. This must be done prior to rooting, as mentioned above.

Step 1: Enter Fastboot ModePlace your device into fastboot mode by plugging in your HTC One to your computer, then powering it down by holding both the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the screen below.
Step 2: Locate Your Identifier TokenOnce the screen above appears, open up a terminal (command prompt) on your computer. To get the right Unlock Code for your HTC One, you first need to get your device's specific Identifier Token, so type the following into your terminal window, followed by the Enter/Return key.fastboot oem get_identifier_token

Step 3: Copy the TokenNow copy the code you get, but do not include the first (bootloader) portions.
Step 4: Log into HTCdevGo to HTCdev and log in to your account.

Step 5: Get Your Code Emailed to YouSelect Unlock Bootloader and then Get Started. From the drop-down menu, select HTC One (M8) (or just HTC One for the older M7 model, if that's what you're unlocking), then click on Begin Unlock Bootloader.Agree to the terms and conditions and click Proceed to Unlock. On the next page, scroll all the way down and click on Proceed to Step 5. Now paste the identifier token you copied in Step 3 into its corresponding box near the bottom (called My Device Identifier Token) and click Submit.
Step 6: Download the Unlock CodeThe Unlock Code will be emailed to you, so once you receive the email, download the attachment and place it on your Desktop.

Step 7: Initiate the Unlock CodeBack in the terminal prompt, type the following.fastboot flash unlocktoken Desktop/Unlock_code.bin Change Desktop/Unlock_code.bin to the location of your code.

Step 8: Confirm on Your HTC OneYour phone will now prompt you to unlock your bootloader, so using the Volume Up button, select Yes and confirm your unlock with the Power button. Your phone will now reboot and your bootloader will be unlocked!After the reboot, you will need to set up your device again as if it were new. After getting set up, make sure to re-enable USB debugging and plug it back into your computer.
How to Install TWRP Recovery & SuperSUNow it's time to instill root privileges on our device, and to do that, we have to install both a custom recovery (in this case, TWRP) and SuperSU.
Step 9: Download SuperSUStart by grabbing SuperSU from Chainfire directly on your phone, or download and place the file in your device's "Download" directory.
Step 10: Enter Fastboot ModeJust like we did back in Step 1, place your device into fastboot mode.
Step 11: Download TWRPNow download the appropriate TWRP recovery file for your particular wireless carrier and edition below.If you have an AT&T, T-Mobile, Developer, or International edition HTC One, go to this page to download the TWRP recovery.img file. If you have a Sprint HTC One, go to this page to download the TWRP recovery.img file.
Step 12: Flash Your RecoveryNow let's flash your downloaded TWRP file to your HTC One. Type one of the following commands into your terminal window, depending on which file you downloaded above.For the AT&T, T-Mobile, Developer, or International editions, type:fastboot flash recovery Desktop/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.2-m8.img For the Sprint edition, type:fastboot flash recovery Desktop/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.2-m8_whl.img

Step 13: Erase the CacheOnce you get the Success message from ADB, type fastboot erase cache to prevent any boot loops.
Step 14: Boot into RecoveryBack on your HTC One, highlight Bootloader (using your Volume keys) and hit the Power button to confirm. In bootloader mode, select Recovery and hit the Power button again to boot into recovery mode. Your device will now reboot into TWRP.

Step 15: Install SuperSU in Recovery & RebootTap the Install option and select the SuperSU .zip you downloaded earlier, then swipe along the bottom bar to install. After the install finishes, go ahead and hit Reboot System.Congratulations, you are now officially rooted!
Now That You're Rooted, Where to Next?Once your device reboots, you will have a new SuperSU icon in your app drawer and the ability to grant apps root access to your device. This will come in handy when using apps like Xposed Installer.You will also be able to restore your data the same way you backed it up (if you used the ADB method), so re-enable USB debugging, if you hadn't done so above, and get the restore process started.
